PREDICT THE WEATHER?

Summer is over. Fall is around the corner. This is the time of year we see the little legendary fuzzy caterpillars, whose bands of color tell us what winter will be like. The more brown, the milder the winter or so they say. I saw my first one the other day. He was all black. We’ll see if his prognostication is accurate!

I decided to look up information about these little creatures. I enjoyed the online article in the Old Farmer’s Almanac. They even had this picture that they said I could share. According to the 1999 Old Farmer’s Almanac, in 1948, Dr. C.H. Curran, currator at the American Museum of Natural History made Woolley Caterpillars the most recognizable caterpillar in North America by his eight year experiment trying to prove scientifically that the color bands would predict the weather. He may not have succeeded scientifically, but he made us all believe they really did predict the weather!

Here is the link to the article on the Woolley Caterpillars.

COLOR WHEEL

Someone swept into my life the other day. She is a talented sister in Christ whom I love and appreciate. She is a whirlwind who can bring order out of chaos, makes rooms look pretty with her decorating skills, and loves yardwork and landscaping. She is tireless. I love her for it and I am thankful for her.

And I realized I was jealous of her. She is all the things I am not.

The other day she said to me, “You are so patient with your grandchildren. I could never homeschool the 12-year-old like you do.” I smiled and said, “Thank you. I really enjoy homeschooling him.”

I thought about that. How foolish I was to be jealous. God gave her certain talents; he has given me certain talents. If everyone had her talents (or mine), there would be things left undone. And I thought about a young man I knew years ago who had Down’s Syndrome. His life was more of a glory to God than mine could ever be!

So who am I to judge whether my friend’s talents are more important than mine. Humans with their different talents are like a color wheel. Each primary color has a complementary color. Together, they make beauty. Together, differently talented people make beauty as they use their giftings to God’s glory.

l am no longer jealous of her; she is a delight and I marvel at her talents while I enjoy mine.

HEART COVERS
The needles of time
knit the yarn of our hearts
together into a sublime cover
in hues of sunshine,
streaked with storm clouds.
We discover
we are better together
than alone.

SOMETHING GOOD

A Momma’s view asked that her readers share something good that happened to them. The good thing that happened to me this morning was going to church and getting to join with others in praising our great Creator God. I blessed Him, but in turn I was greatly blessed with the talk of heaven and what it will be like. I have much to do here, but this morning will go with me as I face the trials that come along!

Go to A Momma’s View and share something good that happened to you!

Trusting God

My favorite Bible verse list has grown! Habakkuk 3:17-18 has led me to be more thankful for all God has given me. Remembering to be thankful helps me to go through trials and trust Him who loves me!

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the v  though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet  I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”

The Aquarium

When my older daughter was 3 years old, we were given a ten gallon aquarium. We loved it. The fish were neat to watch as they swam back and forth, relieving tension in the viewer. We had some mollies, a couple cat fish, some neons, and a plecostomus. A plecostomus is a shy, prehistoric-looking bottom feeder that keeps the tank clean. Wikipedia says: “Plecostomus, pleco, or plec is the common name of several species of freshwater loricariid catfish commonly sold as aquarium fish.” He was very shy and would lose his color when frightened. I remember sitting by the tank one night and he was feeding close to the front of the tank. I moved forward and he moved back, growing pale. When I sat back, he swam forward to feed again. We repeated this action several times. I was fascinated by his shyness.

It only took a short time for my daughter to run around chattering about the plecostomus! It was fun to hear her converse about him!

When we moved a few years later, we gave away our aquarium and our wonderful plecostomus. To this day, he is a special memory.

IN HONOR OF MY MAMA

My Mama and me, 2012

This poem is not a new one, but expresses something of who she was. I miss her, but she is happy now in the arms of Jesus!
In honor of Mother’s Day and my second one without her.

GREAT GRANDMA
Your great-grandson is only four
but he’s heard the songs from the forties.
“Abba Dabba Honeymoon,”
“Me and My Shadow,”
“Playmate, Come Out And Play with Me,”
“Teddy Bear’s Picnic,”
songs you sang to Gayle and me
when she was three and I was four
and more.

Maybe someday he’ll get to meet Mrs. Doodenlopper.
She used to come take care of Gayle and me.
She looked like you.
We said, “You’re our mother!”
She always replied, “Oh no,
she’s at the store. She’ll be home soon.”
Then we would have tea and giggle
when Gayle was five and I was six
and more.

He’ll never get to see the doll furniture you made
for Gayle and me from orange crates
with a hammer, nails, and your butcher knife
when you were pregnant with Wayne.
It made a dandy kitchen with
empty thread spools for knobs.
We wore them out playing house
when Gayle was six and I was seven
and more.

GOODBYE TO MAMA

May 14 is drawing closer. Two years ago, I said goodbye to my precious mama.

GOODBYE TO MAMA

As I say goodbye to you and all you were,

As I pack the last of your belongings,

Tears deep within my heart break forth.

Overwhelmed, I cry and yet I know

These things weren’t you.

Over the years, you changed, I changed,

Living conditions changed.

But you were still you,

And you lived in my heart.

So as time grows short to pack and say goodbye,

I look to the time when there will be no more goodbyes

And you and I will be the true us,

And we’ll never say goodbye again.

THE REASON

There is a reason for Good Friday and the Resurrection Day we call Easter! Praise God, He provided the way for us to life!

SEEKERS
Fallen from a world of grace,
they turned their faces from God’s face.
Their future dim, no hope unless
they turn to one who wants to bless.
The wrath of God which man deserved
is poured on one who came to serve
the very ones who turned away
so they could find their own desired way.
A God of wrath extends his hand
to draw men from the devil’s land
to life through one who gave His Son
and rose again—the victory won.
