Something Good

Something good happened to me yesterday. I was a chaperone for a 6th, 7th, 8th grade band field trip to a major university. The band teacher wanted to give her students a look at a college marching band and tour the university. My grandson is in the 7th grade  band and he asked me to be a chaperone. I finally said yes, even though it was an all day trip which included WALKING and more WALKING for the tour of the different buildings of this large university. The day started with a two-hour bus trip to our destination. Among the day’s activities were watching the marching band practice, touring the university, a very nice lunch, shopping at the book store, watching the performance by the band, and the afternoon football game. Although I was VERY tired from all the walking, I enjoyed the day. And it was neat to spend some of the time with my grandson. He was tired too, but “I won’t fall asleep on the bus.” So much for last words! He made most of the trip home with his sleeping head on my shoulder.

Something good happened to me!

Wisdom by William Cowper

Dennis Lange's avatarThe Bard on the Hill

Ere God had built the mountains,
Or raised the fruitful hills;
Before he filled the fountains
That feed the running rills;
In me, from everlasting,
The wonderful I AM,
Found pleasures never-wasting,
And Wisdom is my name.

When, like a tent to dwell in,
He spread the skies abroad,
And swathed about the swelling
Of Ocean’s mighty flood;
He wrought by weight and measure,
And I was with him then:
Myself the Father’s pleasure,
And mine, the sons of men.

Thus Wisdom’s words discover
Thy glory and thy grace,
Thou everlasting lover
Of our unworthy race!
Thy gracious eye surveyed us
Ere stars were seen above;
In wisdom thou hast made us,
And died for us in love.

And couldst thou be delighted
With creatures such as we,
Who, when we saw thee, slighted
And nailed…

What Life Experiences Have Taught Me

mewhoami's avatarMe - Who am I?

The meme above is not meant to be taken seriously. It, written with obvious sarcasm, was created to prove a point.

Nearly every day I read a comment on the news, social media or on various blogs written by someone who believes that guns should be banned. That no one should be allowed to own one; not as a concealed carry or in their own home. That, without them, the world would be such a better and safer place to live. I somewhat understand their viewpoint.

I for one, would love to take a midnight stroll and feel perfectly safe, knowing that there was not a single person alive who walks around with evil intentions. I’d love to sleep in the comfort of my bed without hearing gunshots down the street. I’d love for my son to be able to go to school without the risk of a shooter entering…

PREDICT THE WEATHER?

Summer is over. Fall is around the corner. This is the time of year we see the little legendary fuzzy caterpillars, whose bands of color tell us what winter will be like. The more brown, the milder the winter or so they say. I saw my first one the other day. He was all black. We’ll see if his prognostication is accurate!

I decided to look up information about these little creatures. I enjoyed the online article in the Old Farmer’s Almanac. They even had this picture that they said I could share. According to the 1999 Old Farmer’s Almanac, in 1948, Dr. C.H. Curran, currator at the American Museum of Natural History made Woolley Caterpillars the most recognizable caterpillar in North America by his eight year experiment trying to prove scientifically that the color bands would predict the weather. He may not have succeeded scientifically, but he made us all believe they really did predict the weather!

Here is the link to the article on the Woolley Caterpillars.

COLOR WHEEL

Someone swept into my life the other day. She is a talented sister in Christ whom I love and appreciate. She is a whirlwind who can bring order out of chaos, makes rooms look pretty with her decorating skills, and loves yardwork and landscaping. She is tireless. I love her for it and I am thankful for her.

And I realized I was jealous of her. She is all the things I am not.

The other day she said to me, “You are so patient with your grandchildren. I could never homeschool the 12-year-old like you do.” I smiled and said, “Thank you. I really enjoy homeschooling him.”

I thought about that. How foolish I was to be jealous. God gave her certain talents; he has given me certain talents. If everyone had her talents (or mine), there would be things left undone. And I thought about a young man I knew years ago who had Down’s Syndrome. His life was more of a glory to God than mine could ever be!

So who am I to judge whether my friend’s talents are more important than mine. Humans with their different talents are like a color wheel. Each primary color has a complementary color. Together, they make beauty. Together, differently talented people make beauty as they use their giftings to God’s glory.

l am no longer jealous of her; she is a delight and I marvel at her talents while I enjoy mine.

HEART COVERS
The needles of time
knit the yarn of our hearts
together into a sublime cover
in hues of sunshine,
streaked with storm clouds.
We discover
we are better together
than alone.

SOMETHING GOOD

A Momma’s view asked that her readers share something good that happened to them. The good thing that happened to me this morning was going to church and getting to join with others in praising our great Creator God. I blessed Him, but in turn I was greatly blessed with the talk of heaven and what it will be like. I have much to do here, but this morning will go with me as I face the trials that come along!

EGOSCUE

Egoscue–a funny name. Where did I ever come up with that?

I was driving one Saturday and turned on the radio. The voice was talking about pain relief for people who had chronic pain that doctors couldn’t solve. I was intrigued. People called  in and he instructed them about certain ways to stand, i.e. put their feet a certain way, do such and such with their arms, and then he would ask them if they were in pain. It amounted to changing their posture in the way they stood.  It was a momentary relief for them, but the beginning of being pain free. He explained his thesis: when we walk with everted feet, shoulders not even, and many other problem postures, our bodies will be in pain sooner or later. Since my feet have always been everted (making me walk like a duck all my life) and I was having trouble with my knees, I decided to order his book, “Pain Free” and tried the exercises in them. They did help.  I did contact the clinic. Since they were too far away, I sent them pictures of my posture according to their instructions. After viewing the pictures, they sent me a program of exercises which helped. I have since seen a clinician in person and my shoulders are even, along with my hips, and my feet are doing so much better! I  always thought it was normal for my purse to slip off my shoulder because I have narrow shoulders. However, when I am faithful with my “E-sizes” (Egoscue exercises), my purse strap will stay on my shoulder. When my shoulder began to hurt, I began to do the recommended exercises to help. And they have. I have discovered that if I am faithful with my exercises, my pain is less and less.

I am intrigued by Pete Egoscue’s thesis about posture is related to pain, but how it is related to disease, and how important movement is. It is an interesting study!

You can get a look at their website: www.egoscue.com. I think you will find it as interesting and helpful as I have.

Trusting God

My favorite Bible verse list has grown! Habakkuk 3:17-18 has led me to be more thankful for all God has given me. Remembering to be thankful helps me to go through trials and trust Him who loves me!

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the v  though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet  I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”
